Medicare Eligibility Calculator: Do You Qualify?

Medicare eligibility is not always as simple as turning 65. While the majority of Americans enter the program at that age, others qualify much earlier due to specific health conditions or disabilities. Additionally, your work history determines whether you will have to pay a monthly premium for your hospital insurance. Use this calculator to quickly see where you stand and what your costs might look like.

Qualifying at Age 65

To be eligible for Medicare when you turn 65, you must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident who has lived in the United States for at least five consecutive years.

Most people qualify for premium-free Part A at this stage. You reach this status if you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters, which is roughly 10 years of employment. If you do not meet this work requirement, you can still enroll in Medicare, but you will be required to pay a monthly premium for Part A coverage.

Qualifying Before Age 65

Medicare is also available to younger individuals who meet certain medical criteria. You may be eligible for coverage regardless of your age if you fall into one of the following categories:

  • Disability: If you have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments for 24 months, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare.
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease): Individuals diagnosed with ALS qualify for Medicare immediately upon the start of their disability benefits.
  • End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD): Patients with permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant are generally eligible for Medicare.
